For years I have longed to make a quilt but been too afraid to try it. Inspired by many people, including my cousin-in-law, Erin, and SouleMama, I decided to give it a go with some thrifted pillowcases I have been saving for an unknown future project.
Using five pillowcases at 50 cents each, one thrifted queen sheet (cut to size) at $2.00, and one velux style blanket that I've had since Eric and I got married 10 years ago, along with some thread, the total cost for this picnic quilt was about $5.00! It took me two days to complete and I worked for about 3 hours each day. This was a perfect quilting experiment for me because I didn't have to worry about ruining beautiful, expensive fabrics. I learned a lot in the process and I am excited to work on some more quilting projects very soon! I have plans to make some placemats and maybe some chair pads for our dining room plus a shower curtain! Very fun stuff! It was extremely satisfying to watch these little pillowcases become rectangles and then piecing all those rectangles together to make one large piece. So fun!
So here is the finished product- One lovely blanket just perfect for picnicking and memory making!
:) It was really sunny and windy!
Make each day count!
WOW! Great! Greetings from Italy!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! I love that you didn't give up the dream of quilting "someday"! I love your idea of repurposing thrifted items! Not only did you not have to worry about messing up with expensive fabrics, now if you spill or get grass stains while picnicing, you won't flip out! LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea!! Abby would LOVE a project like this!! We'll have to give it a whirl...we have some really old (really ugly) blankets that aren't dead yet they just need a new life :D
